Peppermint Park Redesign
Over the course of the past 2 1/2 years, EBNO has been working with the City of Portland to redesign and renovate the long neglected Peppermint Park on Cumberland Avenue.
In January of 2008, CDBG funds were approved for the renovation, and in July of 2008, when the funds became available, EBNO began meeting with landscape architect Regina Leonard to plan a new design for the park. The park design was completed in January of 2009 and was followed by the process of selecting playground equipment and materials. Once that process was complete, the entire project was to be put out to bid. Somewhere along the line, that process was delayed, and now, the construction we had hoped would begin in May of 2009 has been put off till the spring of 2010.
According to Leonard, there were a number of factors in the decision to put off the construction, "one being that the City felt giving bidders an opportunity to look ahead to the spring would provide the most competitive pricing."
So, for the winter, we are in a holding pattern. The playground equipment has all been removed, but until spring -- post snow melt and ground thaw -- not much more will be happening.
In the meantime you can check out the schematic created by Leonard to see how the park will look once the improvements take place (just click the link below). It's going to be beautiful, and most importantly, it's going to happen. Soon.
